Fog

Happy Friday everyone.  The fog rolled in this morning; it came and went quickly.  Then it was quite a nice day.  (I ran out with my camera before I set off to work.)

Culture

Well that was a cultured weekend. The opera was brilliant. We have a lovely evening, even though we arrived at the wrong restaurant and had to run right across town to get to the right one...

We've been to the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield this afternoon. Been going to go there for ages but not got round to it until now. It's a good place, I was thinking I'd like to take the children then I realised I'd be a nervous wreck, expected a huge sculpture-related disaster any time.

So as we went in, I saw this:

So I did!

Unfortunately, I only had my phone camera with me.

Which pieces do you like? I want to touch them all!

Weekend

Poor grandson Patrick has measles. He has had his MMR vaccination, but the hospital doc says it is possible to contract a mild form of the virus even after that. So he's off school and you can bet the other two will come down with it pretty quick. I remember being ill with measles, I can't have been very old - not school age. My two brothers and I had it together. Anyway, he should have been at a party tomorrow but can't go now, so we're having him for the afternoon.

I have to work part of this weekend, to catch up a bit after an analyser breakdown put us behind. I'd rather do that than have the pressure on even more during next week.

Tomorrow we're going to the opera, to see/hear Andrea Chénier - remember the scene in "Philadelphia" when Tom Hanks' dying character movingly describes the aria to Denzel Washington? It's from that opera. They all die in the end, so I'll be a wreck! Fun!

Winter

Woke up this morning to a covering of snow.  I took photos through the bedroom window of the birds on the feeders, then we had another short walk.  It's thawed a lot during the day, but more is forecast for tonight.

Been doing a bit of walking this week. I walked into town while my car was at the repair garage, to get some shopping from the supermarket. Only 2.5 miles, downhill all the way there, but uphill coming home, with a rucksack of shopping. I am so out of condition!

A more gentle walk today, in the cold air. It's frosty, and tonight it has started snowing.

I have resolved to go out more with my camera. I've lapsed into only using it when I was going somewhere significant, and I really should just take it with me more. So here are just five from our walk:

Service

My van has been in van hospital this week. Routine service, but it turned out very expensive. It's at that stage where we have to balance is it worth repairing vs scrapping and getting a new one. It's eight years old now, and should still have some life left in it, so long as it doesn't get too expensive.

Daft thing: while it was overnight on the garage forecourt, someone broke in and took lots of sets of hubcaps ("wheel trims" as they are now called), from new cars, and also from my old van! They were the originals, so they were old, cheap, scratched plastic. And I'm getting a new shiny set to replace them, for free! Thank you, Mr Hub Cap Thief!

I spent my Christmas money on new boots:

I daren't tell you how many pairs of boots I have. One more pair can't hurt... (And these are so comfortable and light.)

Test

Happy New Year everyone.  This is a test post.  Downloaded the old stuff from our old pc to the new one, so I feel more at home now.  I also had to try to remember how to cross-post to more than one journal.  Let's see if it works...

Okay while I'm here I'll chat.  We went to a play in Liverpool last night - "The Haunting of Hill House", which was great, lots of sudden jumps and creeps.  (I do love ghost stories.)  So we had some time in Liverpool too, looked around the World Museum.

The Christmas tree and decorations have gone away now.  Doesn't everything look bare once they've gone?  So I got some early spring flowers - hyacinths and tulips - to give some cheer.  Actually, the daffodils are already poking through in the garden.

ETA:  The cross-post didn't work.  Back to the drawing board.

After a wonderful Christmas, we were shocked at the awful flooding that happened in our area.  We're okay, but so many homes and businesses have been devastated, so soon after the last episode.  This time it's much worse.  Roads are still blocked, and I wouldn't attempt to get near the worst affected areas, but we had a walk on the canal towpath this afternoon.  The river and canal run side by side through the valley, separated in many places by just the towpath and a wall.  The river overflowed into the canal.  Reasons?  Weather change?  Lack of dredging of the river due to cut-backs?  Building on flood plains?

Cinderella

I should be at this moment sitting in the cinema waiting for The Force Awakens to start. Instead, I'm at home with a cold. We were going with the grandchildren and their Mummy and Daddy (they're all so excited), and while I normally wouldn't worry about a bit of a cold, I really don't want to infect them (and everybody else in the cinema) so close to Christmas. So our eldest Neil has gone instead, as we already had tickets.

I'll see the film soon, I'm sure it will be around for a while. People who have seen it tell me it's good. I was looking forward to it.

Weather

Will it ever stop raining? Floods have been bad again, not as bad here as in Cumbria but still houses flooded, power off, businesses affected. We're okay, we were concerned yesterday because the road became a river, but it didn't come high enough to enter the houses.

Hubby went to Manchester on the train, to a Christmas gathering, but had difficulty getting home because the trains couldn't get through. He had to go a roundabout way!

Here is the way I go to work:

This was last night. It's gone down now. And this morning was a heavy frost, everything white, and the water freezing.

Just a quickie...  The sky this morning just after I got to work:

And then this evening, the moon rising as I arrived home:

Feels like a long day.  An early night is called for.

Mid Week

My van broke down yesterday.  A flashing "STOP" light lit up, and in the manual it says do not drive if this lights up.  So I called the breakdown firm and it took 2 and a half hours for him to get to me.  Unusual, they're usually really fast.  Luckily I was at Mum's so I wasn't waiting outside in the cold.

Long story short:  he couldn't fix it, so it's been in the repair garage and it was a leaking brake fluid pipe.  Fixed now, all safe again.

While we were waiting, I went through more Christmas cards with Mum and finished all hers.  She was pleased to have done the job.  Today I took her for a check-up at the surgery.

Last week we had a girly night out at a spa, with friends from work.  First, we had the hot tub and Prosecco - by moonlight in the freezing cold!  At least it wasn't raining or snowing.  That was fun, and so warm - until you have to get out.  Then we had tapas, which was excellent.  Then leg/foot massage.  A very nice evening.

Halloween

The party went well, although thirty-five children turned up instead of the expected twenty...   In the evening, we had a steady stream of trick-or-treaters, and then it was the annual Scout Group bonfire and firework display.  Now we have all three grandchildren for a sleepover, and although they were hyper when they went to bed, they've gone off now.

Hoping for a decent night's sleep.

We took the children to the farm shop to buy pumpkins yesterday, and today they've been creating great spooky faces (and a bit of a mess in the kitchen).  It's the children's Halloween party on Saturday, in fancy dress.  Daughter's organising it so she's been making lots of decorations and prizes.

Yesterday I also had my 'flu immunisation.  I had a routine check-up at the doc, and I was offered the jab so I thought I might as well.  I have to make a decision about whether to continue with hormone replacement.  I've been taking it for...  I think seven years.  I should come off it, but I'm not looking forward to the "change" symptoms again.

Been out for a wander in the woods, on a misty day.  My starting point:

Here's grandson Patrick in his Halloween costume.  He wanted to be the new Star Wars baddie:

 photo Patrick SW_zpsmxnbiyav.jpg

(Photo by my daughter with her phone camera)  Trouble is, he gets so hot, he's going to melt under all that.

There'll be a party at the pub where my daughter works part-time, and as she'll be working I'm going to help with the young 'uns.  I have to dress up too, so I'm going in my Jedi robes.  Molly will be a devil, and Alex will be Darth Vader.  I think I have to pressgang my hubbie into going too, so he can be another Jedi.

Not much else to post about at the moment:  work is awful, I broke a tooth on Sunday (dentist fixed it on Monday), I've been shopping for some new warm clothes (knitwear etc), enjoying the season very much, Mark's shop had its first official customer even though they're not officially open yet - and it's looking beautiful.

I've been making Christmas cards.  I know, but I have to start early or I don't get them done at all.

Ouch

Grandson Patrick had an accident yesterday. (Accident prone? Well yes.) He fell off his scooter - over the handlebars, and bashed his face. He broke one of his front teeth right off, and cracked another badly. Emergency trip to the dentist (so I went round for Molly and Alex), and he has temporary crowns, and has to go back next Wednesday for the permanent work.

Poor lad. He also scuffed his nose.

I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. My finger joints are painful, and swollen. I've been ignoring it, but it's getting worse. What an old crock!

My brother and his wife have been visiting from France, we just took them back to the airport at Liverpool.  It's good to see them, and we've had a busy time.  We've been to Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Speke Hall and a concert to hear the orchestra.

My car broke down last week and it's been in for repairs all week so we've all squashed into hubby's Micra!  We managed.  Got it back today, and it wasn't as bad as feared.  The gears stuck, which sounded awfully expensive.  I was planning on my new car!  Anyway, it wasn't bad at all, and now it's back.

Mum-in-Law had a fall last weekend, hubby found her on the floor after falling the night before.  It could have been so much worse, it's so lucky he went to visit when he did.  Yes she does have one of those emergency call buttons to wear, no she wasn't wearing it...  She's been in hospital all week, seems fine, they're doing lots of physio and assessments before she can go home again.

Patrick's scan results came back and he's fine, everything normal.  His sight and sound hallucinations haven't happened for a few weeks now.  The doc thinks it was caused by stress, and his regression (losing skills that he once had) is "normal" and sometimes happens.  So now to work on regaining skills and getting new ones!

I think a really quite weekend is called for.

(Not likely - Mark's shop is at the mad stage, lots to do before it's ready and they have so many orders already.)
